Nigeria Boat Overturn Leaves Nearly Thirty Dead
(MENAFN) Emergency personnel in northern Nigeria's Yobe State have raised the fatality count from a weekend boat capsizing to 29, up from 25, following Monday's recovery efforts, officials announced.
Mohammed Goje, director of the Yobe Emergency Management Agency, told reporters in Damaturu, the state's administrative center, that rescue teams and community members retrieved four more bodies from the Yobe River during Monday operations.
"About eight to 10 more people are still missing," Goje stated, adding that search efforts have been stepped up to locate additional victims.
The wooden vessel, transporting approximately 52 passengers—primarily fishermen and agricultural workers from the area—went down in the Yobe River late Saturday, according to authorities who disclosed the incident Sunday.
The craft sank during transit from Adiyani, a community in neighboring Jigawa State, to Yobe.
Initial findings point to "overloading and structural defect" as the principal factors behind the tragedy, Goje revealed.
He confirmed that 13 survivors who sustained injuries received medical care at a nearby hospital and have since been released.
